Company Details

This family owned company is an artisanal gourmet sausage and hot dog seller that focused on coming up with the best-tasting food in their respective category.

They are a multi-time, competition-winning, purveyor of smoked and unsmoked handmade meats. Never frozen and only serving products that pass their extremely high level of care and attention to detail.

Challenge

The issue at hand here was primarily the creation of a web store where they could sell their products. They wanted an easy-to-use, clean, and editable solution that could be used to adjust in-house products should they ever want to make changes themselves.

There are some great solutions for this and being that it was a WordPress website we knew exactly how we were going to tackle this project.

The Strategy

Knowing that they wanted something that was easy to work with and as simple as possible, I knew that a more popular tool was the best option. Popular tools work very well for folks that aren’t as tech literate for the simple reason that the amount of documentation and resources that are at their disposal is usually quite high. In comes the all-powerful WooCommerce. Not only can WooCommerce be set up in a way that’s easy to use, but it can also be extended in the future to something greater, should the client want to expand it’s store down the line.

 

  • Have a deep understanding of the client’s individual product line to align with the brand.
  • Examine other online retailers in the same industry to understand which visual layout works best.
  • Set up WooCommerce following the specifications given by the client.
  • Keep the store organized in such a way that anyone could make changes on the back-end.
  • Instruct the client on how the store works, and where they should and should NOT make changes.

What We Learned

Having a good understanding of what efforts have been done on the website before can give you much-needed context that will make other web dev tasks easier. If the old web developer is still working with the client, having them at arm’s length for questioning can and will save you precious time. Sometimes clients are perfectly satisfied with having the most simple version of the implementation. Don’t overcomplicate things with extra features and widgets and focus on the task at hand. And last but not least, checking in often with the client during the development process will save you time in the long run. While implementing a web store is a relatively common occurrence for businesses, each one has their own unique twists and turns.
